THE public consultation process over the design of the new Montrose Swimming Pool is underway.
The £10 million pool is set to be built adjacent to Montrose Academy's campus and physically linked to the Sports Centre on Marine Avenue, replacing the current facility at The Mall which council officers say is approaching the end of its serviceab
le life.
But many of the features and design aspects of the pool have yet to be finalised and the local authority is asking for the views of the public as it aims to deliver the new facility by 2012.
A spokesperson for the local authority said: "Angus Council is moving forward with plans to build a new £10million swimming pool in Montrose.
"The pool, set to be built next to the school and linked to the sports centre, is due to be completed by 2012, with work expected to begin in September 2010.
"Swimming and water sports groups likely to use the new pool will be consulted as part of the initial stages of the project as will national and regional sports agencies and Scottish Swimming. Angus Council also welcomes comments from local residents."
The £10million provision for the new pool was included within the council's 2007/2011 financial plan during the 2008/09 budget. This provision was based on an outline feasibility report compiled in March last year. It included indicative costs for an eight lane pool with health suite and alterations to the existing sports centre to accommodate a combined entrance area.
On completion of the initial consultations, the outcomes will be collated and a detailed brief will be prepared and agreed by council officers. This would then be the basis of the development for the outline design.
Local councillor Paul Valentine urged the public to take part in the consultation process.
He said: "I would urge anyone interested in the type of pool and the facilities available, to make their views known.
"Presently we know where the location will be and how much the project will cost. Ten million pounds is a lot of money for a single project in Angus and we must ensure that what is delivered is something that all of its customers are happy with.
"The new swimming pool will be a building which will be with us for a long time, so please ensure that we get it right by telling Angus Council what you would like".
The consultation can be found on the Angus Council website at www.angus.gov.uk, by following the "Have Your Say" link, and clicking on current consultations.
The consultation process is set to end in November.
